Our Story

WHere National Meets water.

Welcome to The Cooperage. We are glad you are here.

Dating back to the late 1800s, The Cooperage began its life as a working cooperage—crafting barrels by hand in a space built for industry and grit. With more than a century of history behind it, this building has seen remarkable transformations, each chapter adding to its story. From barrel making to race car frame manufacturing, from Prohibition-era bootlegging to vibrant salsa nights, these walls have lived many lives—even if they can’t quite tell the tales themselves. Today, The Cooperage has evolved into something new: a welcoming gathering place where music fills the air, friendships are formed, and moments of connection come naturally. A space rooted in history, yet alive with energy, creativity, and community.

The team behind The Cooperage is a blend of diverse experience and shared passion. Emily, with a background in nonprofit events, and Mitch, coming from the world of fine dining, launched Pioneer Catering Co. in 2014. What began as a venture serving thoughtfully crafted food and cocktails in backyards and venues throughout Milwaukee quickly grew into something more. When the opportunity arose to open The Cooperage in 2018, the vision was simple yet meaningful: create a space they’d love to spend time in themselves. A place with exceptional food and drinks, great music, and an atmosphere that brings people together.

Today, that vision lives on. We invite you to join us in the heart of Milwaukee—where good company, great flavors, and unforgettable moments come together to create lasting memories.
